I get a lot of questions about trusts and there's no doubt that they are a misunderstood

0:04.3

and underused aspect of financial planning, but they can really make a difference, so let's talk

0:09.8

about trusts. trust. I remember being introduced to the idea of trusts when I was sitting my basic

0:19.2

finance exams 22 years ago and I remember just thinking there were really esoteric and abstract kind of

0:26.0

concept and they are in a way. But my job now is to make it not like that for you. So let's put five minutes on the clock down here and

0:34.4

say a quick thank you to my friends at Seven Investment Management for

0:37.2

1:14.9

personal control and into the control of some other people called your

1:19.4

trustees. Now this is a good time to mention that there are actually three parties to any trust arrangement.

1:25.6

The first is the settler, or just settler most people call it, and that is the person or people

1:31.9

setting up the trust and dictating its terms.

1:34.9

They are the people placing assets, whether that's money or whatever, inside the trust.

1:41.3

Next you have the trustees and they are the people

1:44.7

tasked with looking after the box and its contents on your behalf. Now it's very

1:50.4

normal for the settler to be a trustee so you can wear two hats in this

1:54.8

whole weird metaphorical game we're playing here but a trustee's job is to look after
