made by the head of the CDC's vaccine advisory panel. But first, let's start with Bob Oakes.

He happens to be a former colleague of mine. For decades, he was WBUR's Morning Edition host,

and that's my home station. Bob was also one of the most respected political reporters around these parts.

Bob was born in December of 1954.

That also happens to make him a survivor of what was once the most feared disease in America.

In her journal, my mom kept a journal.

She repeatedly wrote about how I was an active baby standing in the playpen,

in the bathtub, in the crib before I was six months old.

But then just a month or so later, she wrote, you became sick.
