Summary

We are less than a year into the NIL era in college sports and it already seems out of control. Can NIL be regulated? Should it be? And if so, how? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that topic in detail. Also covered on the show are the recent Crystal Ball picks for the Buckeyes in recruiting, and it's a big day on the Ohio State football beat as we will interview several assistant coaches today. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. (We apologize for some technical issues near the end of the show.) Good morning, Bucknutters. Welcome to the Bucknuts Morning 5 here on Friday, May 6, 2022.

I am Dave Biddle. I am very happy joined by Jonah Booker for his usual Friday visit.

0:38.0

Little old-school flavor here. We're recording the show late on Thursday night due to scheduling conflicts early Friday morning.

J-book a lot to get into my man. Let's start with N-I-L madness. It is out of control. It's interesting. Some people hate it. Some people love it.

0:55.0

Some people are somewhere in between. Where are you at on this so far?

1:00.0

I'm the type of person that's kind of in between right now. There's aspects that I like about the N-I-L.

1:07.0

And then there's aspects that I was like, oh man, they need some type of guard rails because it's essentially the Wild Wild West.

1:14.0

I'm all for players getting paid. If the market is dictating this is how much they're worth, then I'm all forward.

1:22.0

For hundreds of years, a lot of players just been coming up and playing and the schools have been making a ton of money off the players.

1:30.0

And now that the market is saying that they should be paid X amount of dollars, I'm all forward.

1:36.0

I really appreciate the way Ohio State is going about doing their N-I-L foundation because it's really setting the table how things I think eventually will happen across the board.

1:50.0

And we mentioned it last week on the Buckness 95, the way Alabama or Ohio State and Clemson, Georgia are going about where setting up their foundation to say, hey, once you're on campus, we can do XYZ.

2:03.0

And you look at Ohio State, you know, Travion Henderson is making a significant amount of money right now.

2:08.0

You look at CJ Stroud and Jackson Smith and Jigla with their offer with express.

2:14.0

I'm sure those guys are being paid handsomely. And then you look at some of the younger guys, Keon Gray's even got to deal with the foundation.

2:22.0

So not only are they taking care of the upper echelon guys, but they're taking care of some of the younger guys.

2:28.0

And then you add on to the fact that Ohio State will be giving kids, I think $5,900 extra in bonus if they're meeting their academic requirements.

2:38.0

So there's a lot of money that's going around what I don't like about the NIL and the way things are going is what you're seeing from Tennessee and USC and Florida and Texas A&M where they're essentially buying recruits.

2:54.0

It's pay for play. That's basically all they're doing.

2:58.0

And then the tampering aspect of it, that process right there, it really hurts me because even though it could happen to someone like Pitt with Jordan Addison, I can easily see the same situation happening at Ohio State.

3:14.0

Who's to say Texas doesn't go at A&M prior and says, I'll give you a million dollars after B. John Robinson leaves to come to Texas and be our starting running back.
