Summary

Jesse has a long history experimenting with money. From rating every meal he and the family ate out, to "hyperbudgeting," to not budgeting at all... he's run an experiment almost every year for the last several years to see how his habits affect his financial planning. In today's episode Jesse recaps the experiments he's done, how they went (good and bad), and reminds us that personal finance is, well, personal.

It all comes down to just giving every dollar a job.

That is the principle we teach, and that is the principle around which I have built a little

It is called Wynab.

But today I want to kind of, again, not really talk about the app.

0:42.9

I want to talk about exploring, exploring you through the lens of your money.

Now, spendfulness, achieving that, that place of more margin, virtually no second guessing, is where you want to be.

But it's an exploration to get there.

1:00.4

And over the years, I don't know why, this started with the podcast where I would think out loud.

1:04.5

And I would just experiment and it would always teach me something.

1:08.8

And so I wanted to kind of rehash some of the experiments that I've done over the years and give that to you as experiment fodder.

1:17.1

Also ask you, if you wouldn't mind, maybe comment and give me some ideas for experiments that I might try in the future.

1:25.5

This year, I want to just move to mostly cash and literally just carry around wads of cash.

1:33.6

But look what's happened.

1:35.5

I am yet to actually make it happen by going to the ATM and pulling out said cash and, you know, giving some to Julie and being like, hey, Julie, here's our

1:44.7

experiment for the year. She's very used to these experiments. So that might be a signal on,

1:50.8

you know, in and of itself that getting that cash out is a bit of a blocker. Anyway, that was

1:56.0

one I was going to run for 2025 and I'm yet to start and here we are you know not we're into it quite a bit

2:02.8

so i don't even know if i could call it a 2025 experiment just yet um the first experiment i

ever did was simply rating every time we ate out and i would record it in ynab and in the memo
