There is new work on one of the great nigmas of modern American history, Richard Nixon, and it is titled Being Nixon.

And the author is Evan Thomas. Mr Thomas has written quite a number of books

What is he divided between?

Pretty basic, light and dark. You know, we have this dark view of Nixon, or I think a lot of your

listeners do, that he was wicked and evil and all that, and I just, that's not true. That's not the

real Nixon. The real Nixon was a complicated

guy who wanted to be optimistic and upbeat when he came into a run when he came home he would come in the door whistling turn on all

lights put a show tune on the record player want to be up beat he always tried to give

confidence to his family and to his friends at late night, he would write notes to himself about being joyful, serene, confidence,

inspiring.
