Summary

Elisabeth originally presented this talk on December 6, 1997 in Gillette, NJ.
This recording is a result of our work digitizing over 600 cassette tapes of Elisabeth's talks. Each tape is decades old and the quality of the recordings varies quite a bit from tape to tape. As we preserve Elisabeth's legacy, we will share as much of her work as possible, even when technical issues affect the quality of the audio. Each talk is unique in content and tone. All are a blessing and encouragement.

My topic this morning you have on your paper here, what has happened to the family.

0:12.0

Of course I was asked before this morning to talk a little bit about that.

0:18.0

And I would say first of all, what has happened to the family

0:22.4

is that it appears to be disintegrating in so many places. But it's very heartening to me to know

0:30.7

that there are people here this morning who know what a Christian family is about, and probably some of you are eager to hear

off the boards. Then in the very late 60s and the early 70s, the feminist movement began.

1:05.2

And I don't think we have begun to realize the damage that the feminist movement has done

1:10.6

to all of us, to both men and women.

1:13.6

They insisted upon equality. And of course in God's word, we do not find equality.

1:22.6

C.S. Lewis said equality is a legal fiction, sometimes necessary, as for example in our Constitution,

1:33.1

but not by any means always useful, and certainly it is not a principle that should govern the Christian home.

1:41.6

It's a hierarchy, not an equality, just as God's family is. So the first thing

1:52.3

that I would say to you about the Christian family is that the family is Christ-centered.

1:59.7

If you call it Christian, that means Christ-centered. And a family

2:05.4

is a community established by God. It was God's idea. This transcendent God, who created the universe,

2:20.3

and I always thought there was just one universe,

2:22.3

that that meant everything, but I have read more recently

2:24.3

that astronomers are beginning to believe
