Capital was the defining scarcity of the industrial age, land of the agrarian age, food of the

Forage age.

Now, attention is the defining scarcity.

You can't go back in your life, right?

You can't go back and change what you paid attention to yesterday.

You know, a student who walks into an exam ill-prepared can't go back and suddenly prepare

a nation that goes into a global pandemic ill-prepared can't go back and say, oh, we should

have done more research on coronaviruses.

You just can't do it, right?

So attention is fundamentally scarce.

And the business model of some of the biggest corporations is premised on hogging as much

of that attention as they can because advertising, which is the fundamental business model of

Facebook and Google, is the resell of attention.

It's taking as much attention as you can get and then taking some of it and selling

it to the advertisers.

And that's a lot easier to do by giving you faux outrage and by giving you cheap emotional

things as opposed to saying, hey, why don't you go and actually read this difficult book

or why don't you go and watch this hour-long video that actually explains something in

depth?

That's not in the interest.
