Summary

Trust is the single most important currency in sport, business, and life - and in the age of AI, it's becoming scarcer by the day. This week Jake Humphrey is joined by producer Will to dig into why.

Drawing on some of the most powerful conversations in the High Performance archive, they explore what trust really is, how it breaks down, and whether it can ever truly be rebuilt.

Featuring:

  • Rachel Botsman β€” Oxford lecturer and world expert on trust β€” on the three stages of how trust collapses.
  • James Timpson on why the most successful culture he ever built ran on just two rules.
  • Stuart Broad on the quiet act of leadership that holds a team together when everything falls apart.
  • And Martin Lewis β€” widely regarded as the most trusted person in Britain β€” on why you cannot market trust: you can only earn it.

Plus: why Southampton's Spygate is just the catalyst for a much bigger conversation, what the rise of AI means for human credibility, and the difference between performative trust and the real thing.

Hi there, welcome along to the latest episode of High Performance, where today we are talking about the fact that trust is the single most important currency, particularly in this world of AI, particularly in the world of user-generated content, particularly in an era of the creator economy.

Trust is something that is so hard to build and it's something that

0:22.5

is so quick to lose, but I am not with Damien today. Where is Damien? I hear you cry. We don't

0:29.6

care because we'll the producers with us, a man that we've trusted since day one of creating

0:33.7

high performance. Where is the boss man? As a a professor. We has to go out and do more

0:38.4

important jobs and talk to more important people than us, believe it or not. There's no one more

0:42.7

important than you and me in the high performance audience, though. We are the people.

0:48.3

Yeah, he's talking to like leading football clubs or national football teams and advising them on cultures and high

0:56.0

performance strategies. So we'll let him off this week. I know what he's doing. I know what he's

0:59.8

doing. I think he's having his final meeting with the FA before this year's World Cup because

1:04.8

people, Damien's too modest to tell you himself that he has been advising the FA for the last

1:10.0

few years, including sitting in

1:11.8

roundtable meetings with Thomas Tuka and his backroom staff, helping them work out how they can

1:17.1

create a psychologically safe space for the World Cup, how they can prepare the players in the

1:21.3

best possible way, how they can alleviate the pressure, all those things that we don't even

1:25.5

think about once the tournament begins and it's all about football. Well, Damien is responsible for helping them in that situation. So a really good

1:31.8

example would be having the buddy system in the last penalty shootout where you didn't send a

1:36.4

player on their own to take a penalty. They had a teammate with them. Damien was central to

1:41.0

working that through with the FA. So he's too modest will to tell us these things,

1:45.5

isn't he? Yeah. And this episode is all about trust. And actually for Damien, trust is super

1:51.2

important and the biggest asset he holds and talking to these people in confidence, talking about

1:56.1

things that people don't know yet. So actually, it's his biggest strength and something that he values
