Summary

NATO must turn its attention to terrorism as the number one
threat, and not turn a blind eye to the psychological impact
that ongoing attacks are having on the citizens of its member
countries. It’s ironic that this would still be a debate, since the
London Bridge attack, at the time of the recent London NATO
meeting, should have made the urgency painstakingly clear.

NATO was originally formed to defend its members from
Russian aggression, and some countries are still in denial as
to the more imminent and dangerous threat of terrorism.
There are four reasons why it's a challenge to get NATO
leaders to unite in switching their attention and resources
to terror. First of all, though they agree that ISIS and Al
Qaeda are terrorists, the definition gets more controversial
when it comes to other groups.

Secondly, differences in how countries are trying to cope with
the overwhelming issue of runaway citizens who left to fight
in the Middle East and now want to return, also make it hard
for them to agree. Hear the two other reasons that make it
challenging for NATO to present a united front. And hear
about the psychological symptoms the witnesses to
European terror attacks are suffering from, while NATO
drags its feet.

1:12.6	Well, the problems that Europe is having with terrorism are a foreshadowing of what will come to America.
1:22.6	So America gets to see what works and what doesn't work, which is of course could be, should be helpful.
1:30.3	But the question is, will our obsession with political correctness allow us to take Europe's lessons to heart in tackling terrorism?
1:41.3	Now, why am I talking about this today? Because there was a recent meeting
1:48.5	in London of NATO and NATO leaders. And the issue of terrorism, of course, came up, but it ran into a number of problems, you know,
2:03.2	tackling it and how we should tackle it and whether this should be the focus or not,
2:10.0	did not have everybody agreeing on this. Now, it was particularly French President Emmanuel Macron, who was intent upon
2:22.3	rallying all the NATO members to look at terrorism as the biggest threat, the biggest danger.
2:33.3	And not only was this a good idea in his opinion in terms of, you know, fighting terrorism,
2:41.0	but also to make more solidarity amongst European leaders and NATO leaders,
2:50.0	because, you know, there are, people are tending to go have their own priorities and have different opinions.
3:01.6	So the question is, did he misjudge the nature of the threat of terrorism and NATO's ability to all rally together
3:12.7	to fight it?
