Summary

Following Donald Trump's victory, Jen Psaki explains why Democrats in search of answers aren't going to find a single, clear-cut explanation. Rather, they should stop diagnosing, and start listening. Jen is joined by Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow and Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones to discuss why Democrats must meet voters where there are and how they plan to fight back against Trump. Former Acting U.S. Solicitor General Neal Katyal joins Jen to share his perspective on the extent to which our system's guardrails can prevent Trump from acting out his worst impulses in a second term. Later, Jen is joined by Representative Katie Porter of California to talk about how Democrats can improve their messaging on the economy after American voters wholly rejected their pitch, as well as her potential future plans to run for governor. Jen is also joined by Oklahoma State Representative Monroe Nichols to discuss his historic victory as the first black mayor-elect of Tulsa and how his campaign broke through in an overwhelmingly red state. Finally, Jen reflects on the importance of peaceful transfers of power in our democracy as President Biden promises a smooth transition and peaceful transfer of power.

Well, everyone, it has been a hell of a week.

0:11.9

And I have spent the last few days thinking a lot about what just happened.

0:15.2

And I'm sure you have too.

0:17.3

I'm trying not to completely wallow in it.

0:19.4

Though if you're doing a little wallowing, I get it.

0:21.2

I've been there too.

0:22.9

I'm mostly trying to learn from it and think about what comes next.

0:27.6

Because right now is a time to reflect.

0:30.5

It's definitely a time to be humble, but it's also a time to be very, very curious.

0:36.8

Look, I know there is an instinct right now to try and find some

0:39.3

very clear-cut explanation to make sense of what just happened. But the thing is, there isn't

0:44.4

just one. And there's one thing I know, it's that there were lots and lots of factors at play here.

0:51.4

Yes, there have been some major trends wiping out of incumbents all across the world

0:55.2

post-COVID. Yes, there is a lot of sexism and racism in our country, something that definitely

1:01.4

exists and something that can be frustratingly hard to measure. And yes, Kamala Harris ran a campaign in

1:07.7

just 107 days. During those 107 days, she had some moments of complete

1:13.3

brilliance. The debate and the Democratic Convention both definitely come to mind. And many of us,

1:20.5

perhaps because of those moments, thought she might be able to overcome the burden of an unpopular

1:25.7

governing party, introduce herself to voters,

1:28.3

bring back the members of the Democratic coalition who had left and massively outperform

1:32.0

every single global trend. And maybe that expectation was insurmountable all along, especially

1:40.4

on such a short timeline. But beyond those structural challenges,
