About the speaker: Cardinal Marc Oullet served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America from 2010 to 2023. He was Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada from 2003 to 2010. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2003. He holds licentiates in theology and philosophy, and a doctorate in dogmatic theology.

At the end of a wonderful day of study on the priesthood based on the proceedings of the Roman Symposium of February 2022, I warmly thank all the participants who spoke and all those who made it possible to organize this event in

To conclude this day briefly, let us turn to the future to ask the question, what future

for the priesthood? The enthusiasm of this meeting and the warmth of the

debates should not hide from us the worrying crisis that the church is going through in terms

of vocations, as well as the polarizations that affect it in the world and in America

because of its immersion in cultures that are in the grip of wars, ideologies, radicalizations,

and conflicts.

The Church is a force for peace, justice, and love.

But it is often challenged by currents of thought and interest

that seek to use it for purposes other than its own mission.
