Summary

Startup founders have a lot on their plates—but one of the most important things they can’t afford to neglect is how they build and lead their early team. Kim talks with executive coach and author Julia Austin about one of the most overlooked—but most important—skills for founders: setting clear expectations and giving helpful feedback early and often. Drawing from Julia’s book After the Idea, they cover how early hires shape company culture, why feedback systems matter from day one, and how to align as a team to create realistic, shared goals. Founders, joiners, and anyone curious about startup life will find valuable advice on leading with clarity, empathy, and purpose—because building a business starts with building relationships. Welcome. I'm here with my friend Julia Austin, who has just published a fantastic book called After the Idea.

0:14.1

And this is really sort of some truth, some radical candor about what it's like to be an entrepreneur and to take a glimmer in your

0:24.1

eye and turn it into a reality in the world. So welcome Julia. Thank you so much, Kim.

0:28.7

It is great to be here. You know, you and I first met. I don't know if you remember this,

0:32.8

but I was doing a radical candor talk for you and your team. And there was a lineup of people who were

0:41.6

asking questions, but I was joining over Zoom. I remember. And my daughter walked in behind me. And I

0:49.6

didn't recognize my own daughter. And I was like, gosh, they're hiring people that seem way

0:55.8

young. And that was a long time ago. My daughter was like 12 at the time. Anyway, welcome.

1:03.9

It's been a pleasure to work with you on and off again ever since. So why don't you start by

1:10.7

telling folks why you wrote the book and why you

1:14.6

chose to do this labor of love, which driving a book always is. Sure is. Sure is. Yeah. So I've been in the

1:21.7

startup industry for almost three decades, which is frightening to say out loud. But I've been doing this a

1:26.4

long time. And as a

1:27.7

joiner versus as a founder, but I'm teaching, of course, for many years at Harvard Business

1:32.0

School called startup operations, which is for entrepreneurs who are building real businesses.

1:37.3

And we're missing the sort of secret ingredients of everything it takes beyond that idea,

1:41.4

beyond fundraising. What does it really take, right? To do your finances

1:45.3

and your legal and your marketing and all those things. And frequently I was hearing from people

1:49.6

who don't have the privilege to go to that university. I wish I could make your course or I wish you

1:54.4

could do things outside of the classroom. And so I said maybe that should be a book. Yeah. So I decided to put it into a book and democratize my horse, as I say.

2:04.1

Excellent.

2:04.7

Make it available to everybody.
