Former National Security Advisor John Bolton has been indicted on 18 felony counts for allegedly mishandling and transmitting classified information, some of which was reportedly accessed by hackers linked to Iran. The investigation, which began under the Biden administration, followed standard Justice Department procedures and was not politically directed — despite what Bolton and his defenders claim. 

Prosecutors allege Bolton shared sensitive information with his wife and daughter over non-governmental messaging apps while drafting a memoir, and later failed to disclose classified material on a hacked personal account. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger note that the case has drawn attention for its contrast with the Trump and Biden classified document controversies, with many observers highlighting Bolton's past calls for harsh punishment against others accused of similar offenses.
