This is Kiam Weylant and you are listening to the 116th episode of the word play podcast. This week my edits

have led me to spend more time with my bad guy. I've been digging into his past

exploring his motivations and discovering what makes him tick. It's so easy to throw him a level

and personality onto the page, make him do all sorts of dastardly deeds, and never

dig any deeper. But if our antagonists are going to be fitting opponents for

our protagonists.

Authors have to know them just as intimately as they know their heroes.

And if we're to write convincingly from their points of view, we also have to be able to put ourselves

in our villain's shoes and understand what motivates them to do what they do.

My digging has already yielded some tasty tidbits about my bad guys inner workings,

and my story is already the better for it.
