There isn't the simple truth about this moment. The first polls are starting to appear

that showed Donald Trump beating President Biden in a 2024 hypothetical matchup.

As an objective matter, a matter of fact, a matter of reality, if you believe that Donald Trump

was a threat in 2020 and 2021, that threat to American democracy has not receded.

It has grown. It iseded. It has grown.

It is spread.

It is metastasized.

And it lurks just outside the perimeters of power waiting to seize the rays.

This is possible because something has happened in America on a 40-year basis

that it's time to squarely face. It's rooted very deeply in the collapse of trust between the

American people in very nearly every single institution

you can think to name.

All of this has its origins in a debate that played out in the early 1990s.

In fact, there was an actual debate between a man named

Ross Perrault and the vice president of the United States at Al Gore. And the debate was over

free trade agreements, specifically NAFTA. The vice president argued the proposition that free trade was good,

that it created competition and competition listed the economy.

And for millions and millions and millions of Americans, this was true.

But for millions more, it was not.

What globalization did in the United States in large swaths of the country that are overlooked perpetually and consistently by coastal elites is eviscerate the middle class.

It destroyed the American dream.

These hollowed out American towns dot the landscape.
