Today, for the first time in over a hundred years,

Sinn Fein has come first in Northern Ireland.

In a system that requires political parties to work together,

the candidates leaders end the stormont deadlock.

On Thursday, people across Northern Ireland cast their votes

in what turned out to be an historic election

for the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Over 48 hours, the ballots were counted

and the results slowly became clear.

It's a cavernous sports hall in Maharafelt in County Derry.

The Guardian's island correspondent, Rory Carroll,

was waiting and watching.

You can see it written on the faces of Sinn Fein supporters

at the Can Centers.

I mean, they were just beaming from ear to ear

and they were trying to not do high fives

because I think a message went out to Sinn Fein

and this is a very disciplined party to not be triumphalist,

to not start cheering and for God's sake,

to not give any kind of IRA-type slogans

to be responsible and so forth.
