Summary

Show Notes:

* I think the first thing that stands out is that character really does matter. In 1 Tim. 3, when Paul talks about qualifications for ministry, he doesn't just list talents—he talks about character, as well. Second, we really do need accountability. Dr. Paul Tripp told me about two things he's seen that lead to a ministry leader falling. The first one is a lack of peer community. The second is a lack of seriousness about the power of indwelling sin in all of our live's.
* Third, we never graduate beyond the local church. My wife and I have found that our own personal happiness is best reflected by the quality of our close, local relationships within the local church.

Sometimes we get so enamored with someone's talents that we promote them beyond their character. Paul warns us directly against that.

Hey, everybody, welcome to Ask Me Anything with Pastor J.D. Greer, and we have a great question today.

0:23.8

There's been a lot of conversation and podcasts and different things that are just talking about

0:28.6

what does, what transparency and accountability looks like in the church. And so the question for

0:34.0

Pastor J.D. today is what does transparency and accountability look like

0:38.3

specifically at the summit church? Yeah, great question. Thanks for asking that, Matt.

0:42.7

There are quite a number of podcasts and articles coming out. We've seen just the tragic fall and

0:47.8

sometimes the exposure of some of the things that have happened at some of these places with

0:52.3

these large celebrity pastors, so to speak,

0:55.4

and you kind of look and you say, what's going wrong? How does that not happen here?

1:01.0

Let me just kind of say up front, I'm not really going to comment about any specifics.

1:05.3

And I know that our listeners, you guys may be trying to like, oh, is he talking about this guy or that person or that ministry.

1:13.1

Um, I'm really trying to speak more in general terms when I say this. And sure, we're looking at the

1:18.9

landscape, but let me just reflect on this more personally from me. Um, you know, I think the first thing

1:24.1

that really stands out from a lot of these, and this is actually the theme of

1:27.7

one of these on podcast, is that character actually matters, a great deal. You know, it's in the

1:33.8

kingdom of God, it's not just talent that qualifies somebody for ministry. And First Timothy three,

1:38.0

when Paul talks about qualifications for ministry, he doesn't just list, you know, talents. There

1:42.9

are a few talents in there, able to teach, but he lists, you know, a lot of things about character. And I think that, you know,

1:50.7

the idea that we sometimes in evangelical circles will get so enamored with someone's talent that we

1:57.0

promote them beyond their character, the apostle Paul warns us directly against that.

2:01.4

He says, look, you know, if somebody is gifted to teach, don't let them be a leader if they're a
