no race yeah well so Mary Hainton set me onto your book

recommend everyone read it is It is very good.

So I don't want to be typical, like pretty much every interview, I'm sure you've sat through for this,

but I have to ask the obvious question that's on everyone's lips at the moment,

as masculinity comes into the discourse.

Why did you as a woman gravitate to writing about men?

I think because fundamentally a lot of what was being said about men in the public discourse was fundamentally

untrue and I felt it was dishonest and sort of untrue to a lot of women's experience.

So you know I come from a really loving family and like my

father is a really good man who's sort of gone out of his way to be you know like a

sort of quiet but sort of successful and peaceful and generous guy who has lots of great

virtues and values. You know my brother is a good man a good husband a good father.

I have lots of great male friends and a great male partner and you know I just thought

that there's a whole lot that's being not just missed out but sort of active sort of

demonization of men right that was sort of creeping up in the

in the in the culture and in the sort of liberal discourse around men and I just sort of

thought well it's just not true you know and actually fundamentally men and women

have to get along you know we do get along most of the time

and the background is also this kind of erosion of difference between men and women you know like the

sort of weird idea that you can't say that men and women are different.
