Hello and welcome to Coffee House Shots, the Spectator's Daily Politics Podcast. I'm Cindy You, and I'm joined by Katie Balls and Jones Forsy. So it's June 21st in doubt, after all. The latest news is from various government advisors and scientists saying that perhaps a delay over a few weeks would be a good idea. Katie, what's going on here? Because a few weeks ago, we were hearing

0:42.5

that there wasn't so much worry about the Indian variant. Yes, it comes and goes. And I think

0:48.3

we're now at a point where there's increased concern. We have a situation where the Prime Minister

0:52.9

was busy getting married

0:54.4

1:27.6

before pushing ahead with June 21st and then since then I think again more voices coming out today

1:32.9

from various organisations ultimately saying that the Indian variant is on the rise and therefore

1:39.2

we need to be cautious and the government needs to learn from its past mistakes in terms of moving too quickly

1:45.5

because if you're not careful you could end up in another lockdown.

1:49.2

Now, where are we?

1:50.3

I think that you always have to remember that the scientists are going to push harder on these things.

1:55.8

And meanwhile, Tory MPs are clearly saying, oh, we have to press on completely.

1:59.9

It's also, I think, a little bit of a

2:01.4

negotiation. So you have both sides asking for various things, and where the government probably
