Welcome everybody to Soccer 101. My name is Taylor Rockwell, and I'm here with Graham

Ruffman for a happy edition of Soccer 101 in which we talk about happy, pleasant things relating to the 2026 World Cup. Graham, you into it? You down? Yeah, it's quite a gear shift for us. A little bit, right? Let's just numb ourselves from the depressing reality of the world and the burning oil fields and talk about World Cup mascots and anthems

and stuff that makes a World Cup fun, I guess.

Which cartoon dog did I find most appealing?

That's the topic I needed this week.

And it truly is, I've sort of like, we had, I haven't checked the YouTube comments, I'm

assuming there was a response there. We've had a strong response to some of the way we've been

discussing the upcoming World Cup and the kind of surrounding politics and decision making

and such. And I think some of it was basically like, wow, I didn't realize like how

depressing things were until you all kind of put it all down in that detail and that level of

order. And it's worth

remembering that like that is not why people are watching the World Cup. That's not why the

majority of people tune in and get excited about it. And I think it's easy to get so bogged down

in kind of the depressing realities of FIFA and politics and the like that you can miss that it's

meant to be a global party with global celebrations and global festivities. And so I think it's good, Graham, that you, credit to you, suggested this topic of just like maybe a lighter look at some of War Cup's history. Yeah, I think that's absolutely right. I mean, we have covered both on this show and on the main show, all the depressing stuff about the summer's World Cup, which has to be covered, right? Like, we have to talk about it, and I'm sure there will be more depressing stuff that we talk about before the tournament starts on June 11th this summer. But the World Cup is about more than just the soccer on the field, right? It's certainly about more than geopolitics, and so I thought it would be a good idea to cover some of the stuff that makes the World Cup special. Because if you were new to this sport, and I always try and, when we're thinking of new ideas between us, Taylor, I always try and frame it that way when thinking about soccer 101, which is obviously a bit of a kind of explainer concept of a show. But if you were new to soccer, or maybe even you haven't been a fan for very long,

like only a few years, you might be wondering why the World Cup has this, like,

romanticism around it. And I honestly think of the World Cup as this, like, mystical,

mythical thing. It's unlike any other soccer competition in that sense. I think it's unlike

any other sporting competition in that sense. I think it's unlike any other sporting competition in that sense.

There's just something special about it.

And I think part of that is the fact that it's more than just about soccer.

It's a cultural event for the entire world.
