Machinery running within steel walls will destroy your hearing, and fire is very, very scary.

In the case of the US Navy, we had a dedicated at-C fire party. This was made up of

damaged control men and hull technicians. We would be the first responders in any sort of fire,

flooding or toxic gas situations, including reactor emergencies. We would fight the fire until we

either A, put it out, or B, it would get out of control, and the ship would then go into

general quarters, battle stations. Then the rest of the crew would meet in their predetermined

areas and help fight the fire or flooding. The ship is broken into sections that have repair

lockers, think mini fire stations, with all the equipment to fight. When the fire is initially

called away, the fire party will respond to the

closest repair locker and then gear up and move out from there. In a GQ scenario, each repair

locker is manned by the entire crew. Every few feet in the ship, on every deck and level,

is a fire plug with a hose and nozzles. The hoses are fed by seawater that we've pumped

in and loops at a constant 150 PSI.

The ship is designed in a manner that sections can be closed off with watertight doors and firetight doors.

That way you can keep it isolated.

In the case that the fire is burning so intensely that we can't make entry to actually fight the fire,

you'd go into the compartment above or below or next to, and spray the decks

or overhead to try and keep the heat from becoming so intense that it lights off another fire.

As a whole technician, I did extensive training both before the fleet and during the fleet.
