Bitcoin is gaining popularity, but people are increasingly aware of its environmental

footprint.

Bitcoin mining now consumes more electricity annually than either Belgium or Finland.

The China crypto mining ban of last year is even cited to increase the network's carbon emissions by as much as 17%.

The main alternative to Bitcoin's proof of work is a validation system called proof of stake, which is far less energy intensive.

Proof of stake is used by many of the newer generation digital assets, such as Cardano or

Solana.

There is research to cut energy usage even more by developing novel consensus algorithms such as

proof of space and time put forward by the Chia blockchain.

So there's clearly a growing

awareness of the environmental aspects of decentralized blockchain technology. However, there are also
