Spare a thought for political journalists sitting down to record a podcast in the middle of a developing story.

In particular, this unprecedented, utterly unpredictable political story,

and especially the bunch of political journalists joining me for this edition of Red Lions.

What more can I say?

It's just after half-past two and Thursday afternoon and Boris Johnson resigned

as Prime Minister two hours ago,

sort of, because Henry

he's gone but not quite yet.

Yeah, so what's happened is Boris Johnson has announced

that he's going to resign as Prime Minister,

but he is refusing to step down

and allow a caretaker to take over.

So instead what he's doing, slightly serially, is he is staying in post, apparently,

until the Conservatives have elected a new leader, which is a quite time-consuming process,

so it will probably be several weeks.

And because he obviously lost most of his government last night,

he is therefore conducting a reshuffle and appointing people into ministerial posts, which presumably they will occupy for only a few weeks.

It's a very strange situation.

Yeah, yet again, the phrase you couldn't make it up springs to mind and seems appropriate.

Gareth, you are technically on holiday, but clearly not anymore.
