President Donald Trump has made good on his threat to double tariffs on imports from India to 50

percent, a move meant to punish India for importing Russian oil. They're now in effect, and it'll only

be a matter of time before they hit consumers' back pockets.

And this person who spoke to CNN from a factory in India says it's hitting them hard too.

There will be job losses.

And it's very painful that you know these are people who hardly make $300 a month.

This is worse than COVID.

According to Commerce Department data, the U.S. imported $87 billion worth of goods from India last year.

And as Trump ramped up tariffs on China in his first term and earlier this year,

American businesses sought to find alternative production locations, like India. The top goods coming in from India include pharmaceuticals, clothing, and communications equipment like smartphones.

But there is some good news on the smartphone front, because they're exempt from so-called reciprocal tariffs.
