We often think of the late 19th century in Western societies with its railroads, telegraphs, emerging science, age of Darwin, as an era of immense technological and scientific change.

Moving from religion to secularism, from faith to logic.

But as today's guest Dominic Green shows in his new book The Religious Revolution, the birth of modern spirituality, 1848 to 1898,

religion in the 19th century was a much stronger force and also a lot weirder than we give it credit for.

What we discuss is during the period that introduced Darwin's theory of evolution, democratic revolution, mass urbanization and the industrial revolutions,

also brought with it a new kind of religiosity. This period didn't see an absence of religion, but instead new forms of spirituality that filled the vacuum left behind by the diminished prominence of the church in Europe and American politics in life.

In fact, what led Dominic to think about writing this book topic was when he was physically rehabilitating, he decided to take yoga classes and wonder,

how did a physical expression of Eastern spirituality find its way into Western public consciousness?
