It was a Tuesday morning in the late 1950s in Billings, and a librarian at the Palmy Billings

Memorial Library was facing a task that she had been putting off for as long as possible.

She had to go into the attic.

This wasn't the kind of attic you ignored because it was inconvenient.

It was the kind you avoided because something about it never felt right.

Now the building itself was massive.

It was constructed with heavy sandstone walls, twin towers, and narrowing staircases that seemed to twist in ways that made you lose your sense of direction.

It felt less like a public library and more like something that had been built to last through anything, including the things that people prefer not to think about.

As she made her way up those stairs, each step echoing softly against the stone, the air began

to change.

It grew heavier, thicker,

carrying that unmistakable scent of age and neglect. The structure around her seemed alive in its own

way, settling and shifting with low creeks and distant hollow sounds that had never been

fully explained by anyone who worked there. By the time she reached the top, she could already feel that familiar unease settling in.

The attic stretched out in front of her, dim and cluttered, filled with stacks of old newspapers

and forgotten materials that had been left to collect dust for decades.

The floor was codened in it.

A soft gray layer, so undisturbed,

it almost looked intentional, like a blanket laid down and has never been touched.

She switched on her flashlight and began scanning the space, focusing on the task that she had

come up there to complete. That's when she saw them. At first it didn't register.
