Summary

Anthony Davis is the Lakers best defensive player and LeBron James has shown he can still be elite on that end, but with the amount of perimeter defensive talent that left the team, Russell Westbrook might just be the Lakers most important defender this season. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss Westbrook's strengths and weaknesses defensively, why his flaws can be particularly problematic for this specific roster, and how his physical tools and ability to rebound are reasons for optimism. Later, the guys discuss how Russ plays into the "bigger, stronger, faster" approach to this roster and why that matters defensively.

What do you think about the Laker team now?

0:03.4

You follow the box scores of the games every day?

0:06.0

Just the Lakers.

0:07.3

You're kidding.

0:08.6

That is really a compliment.

0:12.8

I was pleased to see you smile at the top bar show because once the game starts, you have a game face.

0:17.8

You don't smile much out there.

0:20.4

I don't think you have to do things for money anymore. Correct. What's up, Laker fans? Welcome to the Laker Film Room podcast, brought to you by the Blue Wire Podcast Network. I'm Pete, joined by Darius and Mike. And we're in the middle of Westbrook Week. And in the first two episodes, we discussed his playmaking and his shooting. And the long and short of it,

0:38.7

at least from my perspective, is I came out of watching film on those aspects of his game,

0:43.9

more optimistic about them than when I went in. His playmaking, I didn't realize the level of

0:48.8

mental speed and anticipation that he has, his understanding of how to use his body,

0:53.8

and just create opportunities

0:54.7

for himself with his ability to see the floor, but also his passing ability, very accurate,

1:00.2

great velocity on his passes, came out pretty encouraged from watching that tape. And then with

1:04.9

respect to his shooting, that was my biggest worry going in to watching further tape, is like,

1:10.0

how is this going to work? You you know and that's one of the

1:12.5

more the more obvious ones and while i still think it's a weakness i came out of that more optimistic

1:18.5

about that as well in again thinking that i do think it's a weakness but not as big of a deal

1:22.7

and in aggregate the addition of westbrook i, is going to make us a much better offensive

1:27.5

team. Then you had the shooting. I think we've really improved on that end of the floor.

1:32.1

How much we will see. However, on the defensive end, we had a lot of talent walk out of the door,

1:40.0

specifically on the perimeter between Alex, KCP, Dennis, Coos.
