The entire cast was squeezed into the village, look at the playbacks, and they would go crazy.

They would just raise the roof of that tent over our heads, and they would love it.

West Side Story. The film retells the story of Tony and Maria, two teenagers from different

ethnic backgrounds and rival gangs who fall in love in 1950s New York City.

But tensions between their respective friends set them on a path toward tragedy.

In addition to West Side Story, Mr. Spielberg's extensive directorial credits include the DGA Award-winning feature films, The Color Purple, Schindler's List, and Saving Private

Ryan, and the DGA Award nominated films, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the extraterrestrial, Amistad, and Munich.

Following a recent screening of the film at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles, Mr. Spielberg shares insight into the making of West Side Story with fellow director Damien Chiselle.
