There are any number of ways to procure food in the animal world, but for the purposes of today's show, I will reduce them to two.

The way of the whale and the way of the oyster.

The whale travels thousands of miles to find food

from cold, high-latitude feeding grounds in the polar regions

to warmer low-latitude breeding grounds,

consuming untold amounts of krill and small fish as it moves.

The oyster instead lets the ocean bring things its way by cementing itself to a rock,

using a special limestone protein to stay secure.

Periodically lifting its shell to pump seawater over its gills,

it takes in plankton and other nutrients

with tiny hair-like structures called cilia.
