Hey everyone, welcome to Wellness on Mass. I'm Dr. Nicole Sapphire, board certified position,

0:08.0

mom and forever, truth seeker. Well, as someone who delivers a cancer diagnosis just about every single

0:15.0

day as my day job, of course I have to talk about cancer. Everyone knows someone who has either themselves or a family member or a friend or someone

0:23.8

who's been affected by cancer because it really is just so prevalent.

0:27.6

And while we could talk about cancer probably for a year straight, that's not necessarily

0:32.7

what I want to get into today.

0:34.5

You know, one of the big things for me when it comes to wellness on mass, I really

0:38.7

want to shine a light on the science that really matters. And there was exciting research that

0:43.6

came out of Cornell University looking at something very specific from a molecular level

0:49.2

when it comes to cancer risk. But again, this episode is going to touch on cancer, but it's not

0:54.7

entirely about cancer. One of the questions I have had is, how is being overweight related to

1:02.9

cancer? Undoubtedly, we know that the more excess body fat you have, it can increase your risk of

1:10.3

cancer. In the United States, about

1:12.7

74% of adults are overweight or obese. About 21% of kids, adolescents, are also overweight or obese.

1:23.4

That's a pretty terrible number. And in fact, I think that's underestimated because as I look

1:29.7

around at our kids, everyone's kind of packing on a little extra weight just like the adults.

1:35.3

So one of the biggest questions that I have is, is it the fat in the body and its effect on our

1:42.1

body that's leading to cancer? Or is it something specific

1:45.4

in our food that not only doesn't make us fat, but it itself is toxic and is resulting in

1:51.7

cancer? Or is it a little bit of both? And what can we do about it? So let's kind of review

1:57.3

what we do know. It is settled science. Excess body weight is linked to a higher risk of

2:04.3

cancer. It just, it is what it is, and the fact that the United States is the most overweight country
