A journey into how my mind works. I found myself researching a certain study, a scientific study that came out in the last couple of weeks because a lot of friends were starting to text me about it. And of course, me being me, I like to read about something. While I do occasionally speak off the cuff, I am,

0:23.0

I'm very data oriented. I'm like, let me just dive into the study. And then from there, I went

0:28.5

from that study to more studies, to more studies to, I mean, it kind of like ended up with me

0:34.8

looking for aliens in like North Dakota or something. I mean, that's just kind of how crazy my mind goes sometimes.

But have you heard of the new study about linking melatonin to cardiovascular disease, heart attacks,

0:47.4

and just like all cause mortality?

0:50.0

Well, if you haven't, it's probably because of the whole internet's being crashed the last day or so, because it's a hot topic. And people are freaking out because apparently a lot of people take melatonin. Who knew? So what is this study? Well, it's actually a really big study. It's not some random thing on the internet that one person took melatonin and then had a heart attack is actually a big study

1:13.3

done in the United States and the UK, kind of a collaboration study. They looked at over

1:19.7

130,000 adults, their medical charts. So it's pretty well-powered study, a lot of people in it. And what

1:27.4

they looked at was

1:28.4

adults who were diagnosed with insomnia. And so about 130,000 adults who had been diagnosed with

1:35.6

insomnia. And what they looked at was how did the people do who were taking melatonin versus

1:41.7

people who were not taking melatonin. And I mean, to be honest,

1:45.8

there were some pretty startling statistics that came out of this study. And if you look at what's

1:51.3

being quoted, they said over a five-year period, adults who took with insomnia who took melatonin

1:58.4

for at least 12 months had a 90% higher chance of developing heart failure

2:04.6

compared to the control group. I mean, that's pretty significant. 90% higher chance? Yeah,

2:10.9

I think if you were told there's a 90% chance you're going to get heart failure for something,

2:15.2

you probably wouldn't take it. They went on from there.

2:18.8

The melatonin group was nearly 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for heart failure

2:24.4

and also had a nearly 100% increased risk of death from any cause during the study period.

2:34.0

I was like, whoa, like they're not mincing words here.
