And I'm Carissa Weiser.

You may know us from our award-winning podcast Myths and Legends,

but now we've partnered with Cast Media to create a new podcast called Scoundrel,

History's Forgotten Villains, a series that tells the true stories of some of yesterday's

forgotten bad guys in their crimes.

When you think about it, history consists of heroes and villains,

but it's usually the villains who are the most interesting, their flaws, their quirks,

the voids in their hearts that force them to do the unthinkable.

These are the characters that fascinate us, that pull us in,

that compel us to watch, and don't let us look away.

And believe it or not, some of the most fascinating villains

have been largely lost to the history books.

These are the characters that Scoundrel is all about.

For example, you'll follow the career of Sydney Gowley.

Not only learning that, through Sydney and a CIA team,

the US literally sanctioned mind control experiments in torture,

but the story will open a window, allowing you to really feel what Cold War America was like.

Or what about the tale of Iron Mike Maloy, and the way he unexplainably survived innumerable

plots to take his life as part of an attempted life insurance scheme during the prohibition era.

Mike Maloy needs to die.
