This is Lady Killers from BBC Radio 4 with me Lucy Worsley.

We're taking a look, a feminist look actually,

at the wild and unthinkable crimes,

supposedly committed by different murderers in Victorian Britain, North America and beyond.

We're going to be using crime though as a way into the lives of Victorian women because when somebody does something wrong,

evidence gets recorded.

You get all of these details about people's lives and circumstances and motivations that you wouldn't normally get.

And what I really hope to be able to do is to let you hear the voices of

Victorian women speaking to us across the centuries. I was so frightened that I ran out of

the front door into the lawn and as I was standing at the door McDermott came out of the

front kitchen door into the yard and fired at me.

We want to use these stories to open up the experiences of other women.
