I'm Martha McCallum, and I am so thrilled to be joined today by my friend Nazimuanian.

She is an adjunct fellow at the Middle East Institute.

She is a PhD at the University of St. Andrews in Iranian studies. She has a degree from Colombia. She has written and done documentaries about

Iran, about international politics, about foreign policy. She's been an advisor to presidential

campaigns. She is an extraordinary academic.

And she combines both her life experience as an Iranian and also her experience now as someone who lives in this country and has,

lives with her husband and her children in New York City and has raised them here.

to talk about everything that's happening in Iran right now. It's so good to be back, Mara. Thank you for

having me. So, you know, I want to go back to this date of September 16th when 22-year-old Masa Amini

was tragically killed. She was arrested by the morality police. She was visiting Tehran.

She didn't live in Tehran. She had only just arrived. And her hijib was not on correctly, as I

understand it. Some of her hair was showing. And the morality police arrested her, took her away,

and she died in their custody, which unleashed this anger in the streets

of Tehran that has snowballed in such an extraordinary way. And it has the whole world watching and

wondering, what does this mean? What does it mean for the mullahs? What does it mean for the regime
