Summary

I get a large number of requests from men, women, and clients to discuss this topic. Surprisingly, a number of people have also asked, “Can a woman actually be a narcissist too?” So I dug into the research, consulted some therapist and coach friends of mine, and decided to tackle the topic gently but directly. The word “narcissist” gets used as a label way, way too often, and waters down the issues faced by people who have actually dealt with clinical narcissism. Let's unpack and get some insight. If you (or someone you know) think you may have encountered abuse by a narcissist, there’s a great collection of resources and support you can find on Reddit here. Note, this is a support subreddit, not a replacement for therapy or counseling. Welcome to The Man Talk Show. I'm Connor Biedon. And today we're talking about understanding and

0:06.4

unpacking the female narcissist. Now, this came after a few requests from men that I have worked with

0:15.4

and men online through Instagram and through the community. A lot of guys have reached out over the

0:19.6

past several months and said, hey, how do I know if I'm in a relationship with a female narcissist? And can, I actually get

0:26.8

quite a few men reaching out saying, can women be narcissists? Which the answer is yes. Yes, they

0:32.1

absolutely can. And I think the reason why men are asking that question is because for the most part,

0:40.0

it is men that are being labeled and accused as narcissists in our modern culture.

0:45.3

And it's actually become quite popularized that when a man displays a behavior online or in person

0:52.2

that a woman doesn't like or feels threatened by or disagrees with,

0:56.6

that she will automatically sort of move into the space of labeling him as a narcissist.

1:02.9

And it's just sort of like attack on a character.

1:04.9

And for a lot of men that I've worked with, they've been in relationships where that word has

1:09.3

been used and they've, you know, they've sort of

1:11.3

fallen into this trap, although they are certainly not narcissists while there are narcissists out there.

1:18.4

And so I think that this word has been sort of thrown around quite a bit in relationships.

1:23.2

And we do ourselves a disservice when we just start labeling our partners, right? Like, oh, you're acting like a

1:29.4

narcissist right now, or, you know, we start to use these clinical diagnoses for our partners' psychological

1:37.4

and mental health and well-being when in reality we have no basis or grounds for that. And I think

1:43.6

it's a very dangerous thing for us to go

1:45.8

down in that territory. And so I wanted to unpack this because I've actually been working with

1:50.4

a couple of men who have gotten out of relationships with women that were narcissists. And a couple of

1:57.6

these men didn't even know that women could be narcissists, even though they displayed all the tendencies.
