Summary

Friends, we need to talk about discipline, but not in a clickbaity way. Discipline is way too often presented as this monolithic, punishing thing, and that’s an illusion. It’s also—especially these days—an endpoint. That’s also an illusion. Discipline is a daily practice and deepening the connection to your own self-worth and self-respect. Listen in. I'm going to take a bit of a different approach here because I think whenever I see people talking about discipline, it's like the five ways to be more disciplined or, you know, the habits that you want to cultivate during discipline.

talk about what discipline is and how they should do it. But a lot of people don't talk. A lot of

0:30.5

people miss out on telling you why discipline is so bloody important. So I'm just going to put it out

0:37.3

0:43.3

you know, a man with any why can withstand anyhow.

0:47.0

I can't remember if that's Nietzsche or if that is Victor Frankel.

0:52.0

I may have botched who that actually is entirely.

0:54.9

So you might want to look it up.

0:57.4

Cite the quotes.

But in many ways, we need a why.

1:01.6

And for most of us, the reason why we struggle with discipline is because we don't have a good why.

1:07.9

We see discipline as a form of punishment.

1:10.2

We grew up in an

1:11.1

environment where discipline was used against us, used to control us. And for anyone, that kind of

1:19.0

discipline is not going to work because it's shame-based, because it's control-based, because it is

1:23.5

in some ways it feels like we are trying to manipulate or coerce ourselves. And just like other

1:31.1

people don't like to be manipulated or coerced, neither do we. And we don't like to feel like we're

1:35.7

having to manipulate or coerce ourselves. So here's why discipline is so important. Discipline is so
