Welcome to weekday wisdom, the scriptural meditations of doctrine and devotion, and today we're

meditating on Psalm 138.

Let's take it in three parts.

In verses one through three, the Psalm says, I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart.

Before the gods, I sing your praise.

I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love

and your faithfulness for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

On the day I called, you answered me, my strength of soul you increased.

You worship God in a pagan world.

It's not just a world, it's not just a fallen world, it is, as Martin Luther said, a world

with devils filled.

There are many false gods, gods with a little G, that the world bows down to, and we are called

to worship the one true God, our triune God, in the midst of all of this idolatry.

And it really begins with a heart of gratitude.
