Summary

Weed history teaches us to overcome the forces of oppression with the help of our favorite plant ally. In this episode we talk with Dr. Mariana Hoyo, a bright young physician who started out fearing weed because of a bunch of bullshit propaganda, and now has a practice focused on endocannabinology and even teaches classes on the endocannabinoid system at the very same medical school where she once faced shame and stigma for even inquiring about our favorite plant. And who were her first patients in this practice? None other than her own two grandmothers, who both benefited tremendously from this healing herb. And don't that give you some hope... Welcome to an all-new, great moments in weed history.

Well, as those of you who've been listening to this podcast for the last six years know,

0:35.8

I'm not often at a loss for words, but I've really been struggling to find the words right now.

First, let me say that this episode features an interview with Dr. Mariana Oyo, a bright,

0:48.4

young physician who practices and teaches cannabis-based medicine in Mexico. The interview was recorded long before the election, and I know you will find this conversation as enlightening and inspiring

0:57.3

as I did, and maybe it will just help take you out of your headspace, whatever that might be,

1:04.5

to share in this sesh with the two of us. And it was a pretty good sesash. For starters, I discovered that Dr. Oyo's very first patients when she began working with

1:17.5

cannabis were none other than her own grandmothers, both of whom found healing, relief from

1:24.5

the plant, and it really changed their lives. And it changed Dr. Oyo's life as well.

1:31.4

But before we get into that story and hear about several other great moments in weed history

1:37.7

that she has been a part of, I do want to say a couple of things.

1:42.7

This has always been as much of a history podcast as it is a

1:46.5

weed podcast. And, you know, if you feel as dejected and disgusted and discouraged as I do right now,

1:55.0

sometimes it really helps to look back at history to see where people have been and what they've

2:00.0

been through. And there's

2:01.7

some stories in the podcast feed that I really do think might bring you some solace and even

2:08.8

some resolve right now because they remind us that we can overcome anything if we stick together

2:14.8

and that weed will be our ally every step of the way.

2:19.7

I'm thinking in particular about the story of WAM, a beautiful organization in California
