Luke 11: 42-46 - 'You overlook justice and the love of God.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 579 (in 'Jesus and the Law') - This principle of integral observance of the Law not only in letter but in spirit was dear to the Pharisees. By giving Israel this principle they had led many Jews of Jesus' time to an extreme religious zeal. This zeal, were it not to lapse into "hypocritical" casuistry, could only prepare the People for the unprecedented intervention of God through the perfect fulfilment of the Law by the only Righteous One in place of all sinners.

obsequiously in the market squares.

1:05.7

Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that men walk on without knowing it.

1:13.2

A lawyer then spoke up.

1:15.6

Master, he said, when you speak like this, you insult us too.

1:21.7

Alas for you lawyers also, he replied, because you load on men burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves

do not move a finger to lift.

1:32.8

So let's start by thinking about the context.

1:35.8

Currently Jesus is moving from Galilee to Judea, so he's going up to Jerusalem for the

1:40.6

final part of his life, and he's been invited to eat at a Pharisee's house.

1:46.1

We saw that in verses 37 to 41.

1:49.3

The Pharisee, once Jesus is in the house, the Pharisee notices that Jesus doesn't perform

1:54.9

the usual Jewish ritual washings before eating, and he questions Jesus about that.

2:02.9

Jesus then uses that opportunity to talk about what the biggest issue with the Pharisees is, and in the previous verses,
