The writer's Guild of America went on strike yesterday.

After a new labor agreement failed to be reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television

producers, which bargains collectively on behalf of studios, networks, and streamers.

This means that all scripted television and film production, including late-night shows,

as well as development work on new scripts and pitches, has been halted until the party's

complete negotiations on a new contract.

So what are they looking for?

WGA members are seeking pay increases, as well as fundamental changes to the way writing

is compensated for streaming shows, which has made it difficult for many writers to earn

a livable annual wage.

In recent years, median writer producer pay has fallen by 4%, and that is actually 23%

when adjusted for inflation.

In addition to shorter seasons that are canceled on shorter notice than with broadcast

television, compensation in the former residuals from advertising revenue has largely disappeared

as more content is exclusively aired on streamers, where there is no advertising revenue.
