Oregon has officially raised the minimum age to get married to 18, with no exceptions.

Thanks to the passage of a Senate bill signed by Governor Tina Kotech.

This bipartisan bill aligns Oregon with Washington and a list of states that are banning child marriage altogether.

Previously, Oregon allowed 17-year-olds to marry with parental consent, which advocates argued

could open the door to abuse. For example, a parent could sign off on a marriage without the

teen's real consent, something critics say

undermines protections against child exploitation. This new law will go into effect January 1st,

2026. Other states that have banned child marriage, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,

Minnesota, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts,
