From the 1800s to the 1970s, an estimated 150,000 indigenous children in Canada were

forced into government-funded boarding schools meant to assimilate them into Canadian Christian

culture.

Many were physically and sexually abused, and more than 4,000 died.

About half of the schools were run by the Catholic Church, and Pope Francis is in Canada

this week to humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by the schools.

The Pope is being warmly received by many indigenous leaders who are grateful for the

acknowledgement and validation of the crimes committed.

Others want more than just a week-long apology tour, and are asking what concrete steps

the church will take to make amends.

Canada's government acknowledged its own role in the abuse earlier this year, agreeing

to a $31.5 billion settlement with indigenous communities.
