Following up on the tragic school shooting at Michigan State University on Monday night,

the 43-year-old gunman who had no apparent connection to the campus died by a self-inflicted gun

shot wound.

The shooter killed three students and wounded five others who were in critical condition,

after he fired shots in two separate locations, first had an academic hall, and then inside

the busy student union building just before 8.30 pm on Monday, with the school's first

shelter-in-place order notification going out at 8.31 pm.

Police did not know the shooters were about for at least three hours until he was finally

captured on a security camera after 11 pm, before he was found in an industrial area about

five miles away from campus by police who confronted him.

Investigators are still trying to understand a potential motive, though he did have a previous

gun violation for which he had been on probation, as well as a history of mental health struggles.

This took place just hours before the fifth anniversary of the school shooting at Marjorie

Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which killed 17 students and launched a generation

of gun control activists.
