There's a battle between fish and gold going on in Alaska.

And yesterday, the United States Environmental Protection Agency did something they have only

done 14 times in the last 50 years. So here's what's at stake.

A Canadian mining company owns the rights to a mine in Southwest Alaska that could be the

most significant underdeveloped gold and copper mine in the world. It's called the pebble mine.

Unfortunately for the Canadian mining company, that land happens to be adjacent to one of the

world's largest sockeye salmon fisheries, a fishery that supplies almost 50% of the world's

sockai salmon, which happens to be one of the most common salmon varieties used in sushi.

So if you've ever gone out to a sushi restaurant and ordered salmon, there's a good chance

it came from the Bristol Bay Area of Alaska.

The battle for the right to the land has been going on for about a decade.

Environmental groups have opposed the plan as well as the native Alaskan community,

which claims the Sakai Salmon fisheries provide 15,000 jobs to the area.
