Good afternoon from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle now. I'm Patricia Murphy. Here are

today's top stories. It's Wednesday, August 21st. The race for Washington Public

Lands Commissioner is headed to a recount. As Jeannie Lindsay reports, both Democrats and Republicans

are optimistic. Democrat Dave Up the Grove just barely made it past Republican opponent

Sue Keel Peterson by only 51 votes. If that result

sticks after the recount, he'll move on to the general election in the race for lands commissioner.

Up the Grove says for now, his campaign is moving full speed ahead.

We are operating under the assumption that I will be on the November

ballot. Peterson, meanwhile, says she's ready to have a final answer, especially after days of

back and forth as the race came down to the wire. I'm just thinking anything can happen. I'm

waiting, waiting for the results again. The recount results will determine which of them

faces off against Republican Jamie Herrera Butler in November. I'm Jeannie Lindsay in Olympia.

An infusion of cold cash from the federal government will help Seattle cool its libraries. The city has

received a $5 million grant to turn

public libraries into cooling centers to help residents escape extreme heat. John Ryan has more.
