Good afternoon from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle Now. I'm Patricia Murphy. Coming up, we'll take

an in-depth look at how the cost of housing is factoring into the mayor's race. But first,

here's a roundup of today's top stories. It's Wednesday, October 15th. The Seattle City Council

has approved Mayor Bruce Harrell's proposal to increase the local sales tax to fund public safety programs in the city.

Noelle Gaska has more on the vote.

The 0.1% increase is expected to raise around $39 million in its first year.

Harold's proposal outlines using a portion of that money to increase staffing within programs like the city's care department, which screens 911 calls and dispatches emergency services.

Councilmember Marissa Rivera was the only no vote and said while she supports the services, the tax increase will fund.

I just think we should be looking at the budget and find

money to pay for those things out of our existing budget, but not that we should be increasing

a sales tax. It's really a regressive tax that's going to hurt our low-income families. In a statement to

KOWW, Mayor Harrell said the increased sales tax is another tool to help the city
