Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges that he was on trial for, second

degree unintentional murder, third degree murder, and second degree manslaughter.

After the verdict was announced, Bell was revoked and Chauvin was remanded into custody

to await his sentencing in about two months.

He faces up to 40 years in prison as he will be sentenced based on the highest conviction

which is second degree murder.

This verdict also marks the first time in Minnesota State history that a white police officer

has been held accountable for killing a black man.

I can think of a few that you guys missed, including one from last week.

For our second story, I want to bring attention to some new reporting in the Washington

Post regarding conditions in Washington, D.C. jail during the COVID pandemic.

For almost 400 straight days, the entire population of the D.C. jail, which is about

1,500 people, have been subjected to what experts say is a form of mass solitary confinement

without some of the basic services afforded to even those in solitary confinement in

normal times.

Inmates are locked in their cells for 23 hours a day, which psychological experts say

can result in long-term depression, anxiety, heart disease, exacerbation of any existing

mental illness, diabetes, or hypertension, even after they're released.

An overwhelming majority of the jails inmates are black, and many have only been charged

with the crime and not even found guilty of the crimes they were arrested for.
