Bob, though years ago I remember doing an article about fast radio bursts with a cosmologist who said,

we don't know what they are.

They're very strange.

We're going to figure it out.

Have they figured it out, Bob?

No, but they've gotten one step closer. Using web, combined with a new ground-based radio telescope

designed to look for fast radio bursts, FRBs, astronomers now have pinpointed the precise

location of the source of a fast radio burst in a galaxy

about 30 million light years away.

This is an advance because they now know these things can occur in the local universe.

It seems to be at a source that might have something to do with a magnetar, which is a pulseo with a very powerful

magnetic field, they still don't know what caused the fast radio burst, but knowing that it can

exist close to us in the local universe and that they can see a galaxy and a location source

will allow them to better pinpoint what causes these things to occur.

So this is progress, John.

We still don't know what causes these.

They're very short emissions, powerful emissions in radio waves.

They don't know what causes them, but they think they're now tied to magnetars.
