I'm Hello and welcome to the history of Vikings.

Enduring images of Scandinavian warriors, wielding Dane axes and

Ulfbert swords, come to mind every time I hear the word, Viking. The thought of shield

walls in sea battles, ring fortresses, and monastery raids remind me that the Viking warrior

was an important figure during the early Middle Ages. But what were the weapons of this warrior?

Did he prefer to carry an axe or a sword? Was archery a common skill? And were all free men expected to bear arms?

Today on the podcast, we'll be addressing all of these questions and more in an exciting episode

about Viking weapons. Joining me to discuss this topic is Vegard Vike, an archaeological conservator at the Museum

of Cultural History in Oslo, Norway. Vegard is the co-author of a book titled Vikings at War,

which he wrote together with historian Kim Hyardar.
