Summary

Kentucky received two significant backcourt commitments in recent days: five-star point guard TyTy Washington and Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler, who led the SEC in assists last season. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open on Kentucky’s newest ranking and why this team looks different from any other ever under John Calipari. And while UK should be good, Gonzaga (12:00) will be great. The Bulldogs received a commitment from a point guard that only reinforces why the Zags will open the season ranked first. To wrap, the guys talk Jay Wright (22:00) making the class for the 2021 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, and Norlander peppers Parrish with 12 active coaching candidates’ cases to eventually get in.

Hey there, it's Gary Perish. It's Monday, May 17, 2021. Welcome back to the CBS Sports

Eye on College basketball podcast, where we sometimes discuss, calmifying, dodo birds

0:15.0

and leaky black Matt Norlander is here with me. And I suppose we'll start with the biggest

0:19.8

news of the day. Sever Wheeler, a transfer from Georgia has committed to Kentucky's 5 foot

0:24.6

tip point guard who averaged 14 point 0 point 7 point 4 assists in 3 point 8 rebounds

0:30.4

per game this past season. It's a nice pick up for the wild cast. So John Calipari will

0:34.9

go from having zero high level point guards on this past seasons roster to having multiple

0:40.0

guys who can play the position well on next seasons roster. There's Sever Wheeler obviously

0:45.5

but also Taitai Washington, a five star point guard who committed to UK last week. Beyond

0:50.0

that Davidson transfer, Kellyn Grady can comfortably serve as a secondary ball handler. So I'm

0:55.9

really starting to like this Kentucky roster. The Wildcats should return Keon Brooks, Jacob

1:00.5

Topp and Dante Allen Lance, where bringing two five star freshmen, Taitai Washington, Damian

1:05.5

Collins, then they're adding transfers, Sever Wheeler, Kellyn Grady, Oscar Sheeblay

1:10.7

and CJ Frederick. So now I have Kentucky ranked 14th in the preseason top 25 on one dead

1:16.3

leg. Is that too high? Too low about right or totally wrong.

1:22.2

Temperature seems just right. I will say I feel like if Kentucky had not been coming off

1:26.9

the season, it was coming off of like let's say Kentucky would have been just like say

1:30.2

a seven seed in the tournament and just been fine and not been just the up and down

1:37.1

mess it was. I bet you'd have them top 10. I think some of your ranking there is informed

1:41.2

a bit by what Kentucky wasn't last season, even though most of those pieces aren't returning.

1:46.8

Thoughts on that. Maybe you are aware that you're asking a team that I think when nine

1:52.8

and 16 last season to suddenly be one of the 15 best teams in the country. Now when the
